| This page is to announce an upgrade of the Primus Business
Services Domain
Name Service (DNS) servers. The new servers are designed to
increase the
security and reliability of our DNS system which is used by
all of our
customers. The upgrade does mean a change but this should
only affect a small
number of our customers.
All computers on the Internet have what is known as a unique
'IP address'.
Since the address is unique, each computer will be able to
find any other,
specific computer. An IP address is a set of numbers which
can be hard to
remember. The DNS system was created so each computer on the
Internet could
be assigned a 'hostname' which is much easier to remember.
The DNS system's
main task it to map a computer's hostname to its IP address
so they can
communicate. For the DNS system to work, each computer has
to talk to a
DNS server which will do the hostname to IP address mapping
for the client
computer.
For a majority of our customers, the IP address of the Primus
caching DNS serveris configured automatically when the customer
dials into our network. However
some customers may have configured this value manually. In
the past Primus
customers were given the following address as the IP address
of the Primus
caching DNS server:
192.233.85.19
The upgrade is changing the IP address of the Primus caching
DNS server to:
207.244.64.140
To make this transition as smooth as possible, both of the
IP addresses listed
above will work for at least 60 days. Thereafter the 192.233.85.19
will be
discontinued.
As mentioned, most of our customers will not have to take
any action. However
if a customer wishes to confirm which IP address their computer
is using for
the caching DNS server, the links below are to documentation
on the Primus
website for most popular operating systems. If your operating
system is not
listed or you have any questions, please contact our customer

Primus also offers Domain Name Maintenance services. This
is where a customer
purchases a domain and Primus manages the domain for the customer.
Primus
currently runs 4 DNS servers for this purpose. These servers
are being replaced
with 3 new servers which will have new IP addresses as well.
Primus will be working with Verisign and Register.com to
update the IP address
information with these registrars. These are the two registrars
Primus has
worked with in the past to provide Domain Name Maintenance
service to our
customers. For our customers who signed up for Domain Name
Maintenance
through Primus directly, we will be handling these modifications
and no
interaction is required by the customer.
However some customers may have chosen to register their
domain thru a different
registrar but still have Primus manage the domain for them.
These few customers
will have to work with their registrar in order to change
the IP addresses of
the DNS servers themselves.
The current DNS server IPs are as such:
192.233.85.129 -> ns1.shore.net
192.233.145.5 -> ns2.shore.net
192.233.145.6 -> ns3.shore.net
192.233.85.21 -> ns4.shore.net
The new DNS servers IPs are as such:
207.244.64.141 -> ns1.shore.net / ns1.primushost.com
207.244.64.142 -> ns2.shore.net / ns2.primushost.com
207.244.64.143 -> ns3.shore.net / ns4.shore.net / ns3.primushost.com
/ ns4.primushost.com
The new DNS servers are already in production so the information
with a
different registrar can be updated to the new IPs at any time.
Primus will start the process of converting to the new DNS
servers Feb 7th and
it will take several days for all of the updates to be implemented.
When the
work is complete, we will keep the old DNS servers in production
for 30 days
after which the old DNS servers will be shutdown. This should
be enough time
for all of the necessary conversions and to work out any issues
with individual
customers.
